In this post, we’ll cover the top 10 things to do in Tirana, Albania, that you can easily do in one day.

There’s so much to do in this bustling city. You’ll find endless cool cafes and street art. It’s not the prettiest city at first glance, but the more I explored, the more it grew on me. It is definitely worth a stop to get a feel for modern-day Albania.

I’ve also heard it’s being called the NY of Europe because of its energy, lively nightlife, street art, and worldwide cuisine to choose from. If you visit, let me know what you think in the comments below!

Best Things to Do in Tirana

There’s so many things to do in Tirana, but if you only have a day, all the main sights are clustered together. Here’s just how I spend a day in Tirana.

1. Skanderbeg Square

You will likely start your day in Tirana in the very heart of the city. You really cannot miss Skanderbeg Square. This iconic plaza is named after Albania’s national hero. You will find many landmarks here, including the Opera, the Et’hem Bey Mosque, and the National History Museum with its giant mosaic.

2. Climb the Clock Tower

Steps away from Skanderbeg Square, you’ll find the Clock Tower of Tirana. It’s 32.5 meters tall and has been keeping time since 1822. The clock tower was built by Haxhi Et’hem Bey, who also built the nearby Et’hem Bey Mosque. This tower was once the tallest structure in the city. Its bell was crafted in Italy in 1838 and still rings out today.

Once you climb the 90 spiral steps to the top, you’ll get to enjoy some of the best views of the city for just 200 lek (around €2). The tower is open daily from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, except Sundays when it’s closed.

3. Brunch at Botanica Cafe

I love brunch, and I was craving it after spending 10 days in Albania. The great thing is that Tirana has a wide range of international food. You can find just about everything here. So I found this cafe with views of Skanderbeg Square. The brunch and coffee were really good. It’s the perfect spot to sit outside and enjoy a sunny day.

4. Bunk’Art

Next stop on your day in Tirana itinerary will be visiting Bunk’Art 2. This museum brings you back to Albania’s communist past. It’s located in a Cold War-era nuclear bunker.

There are actually 2 Bunk’Art 1 and Bunk’Art 2, with 2 being closer to the city center. If you’re only in Tirana for a day, I’d recommend Bunk’Art 2.

This museum focuses on the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Sigurimi secret police, showing how political surveillance shaped life in Albania from 1945 to 1991. You’ll find 24 rooms full of photos, documents, and artifacts. It’s more compact than Bunk’Art 1.

Opening hours are from 10 AM–6 PM, and tickets cost around 500 ALL (~£4/€4).

5. Orthodox Cathedral

One of the top landmarks in Tirana is the Resurrection of Christ Orthodox Cathedral, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the Balkans. It opened in 2012; its bright white exterior, towering dome, and impressive bell tower stand out beautifully in the city skyline. Step inside and you’ll be greeted with soaring ceilings, colorful frescoes, and a serene atmosphere that offers a peaceful escape from the busy streets. Even if you’re not religious, the cathedral is worth a visit for its architecture and cultural significance — it’s a symbol of Albania’s religious freedom after decades of communism, when worship was banned.

6. Stroll Through Rinia Park

Rinia Park is the perfect spot to take a break from the chaotic city. It’s Tirana’s oldest and most central park, full of shady trees, walking paths, and little cafes where you can grab a coffee or snack. Locals come here to relax or people-watch. Rinia Park is a peaceful escape right in the heart of Tirana. Plus, it’s not far from your next stop, the Pyramid of Tirana.

7. Pyramid of Tirana

The Pyramid of Tirana is one of the city’s most visited landmarks. It was built in 1988 as a museum dedicated to Albania’s former dictator Enver Hoxha. However, it later served many purposes—from a conference center to even a nightclub.

Today, it’s been transformed into a modern cultural hub, with creative workspaces and art exhibits. But the best part is the rooftop you can climb for panoramic views of the city. From here, you can see views of the city after climbing 130 steps.

8. Mosque of Namazgah

55% of Albania is Muslim in religion so you’ll find various mosques spread out through the country. The Mosque of Namazgah is one of Tirana’s newest and largest mosques. The design is modern with a beautiful dome, and the interior has spacious prayer halls.

9. Castle Quarter

The Castle of Tirana is a really unique place in the city to visit.

It started as a real fortress centuries ago, going through many sieges and demolitions. But now the surrounding area has been redeveloped into a lively area with cafes, restaurants, and shops. Some of the old walls and ruins are still visible, but it’s more of a historic neighborhood with a modern twist.

This is a great place to enjoy a drink and dinner.

10. Friendship Monument

The Friendship Monument in Tirana is definitely worth a quick stop. Built during the communist era to celebrate Albania’s ties with the Soviet Union, it’s made up of colorful mosaics and sculptures. It’s not a huge attraction, but I loved wandering around, snapping photos, and taking a break from the city here.
