How to get to Sicily from Malta
To get to Sicily from Malta, you can take a ferry from the port of Valletta in Malta to the port of Pozzallo in Sicily, Italy. You can also fly but the ferry is just a 1 hour and 45 minute ride making it so convenient!
To book the ferry tickets, you can use Omio. The ferry from Malta to Sicily is around €80 one way or €100 round trip. The prices depend on the season.
Also, you can drive a car onto the ferry for an extra fee. This will allow you to explore the island properly on both sides. To get to some of the most beautiful small towns, a car is recommended.
When I was in Malta, I found a car rental for only €6 a day! I used Discover Cars which finds you the best deal across many rental companies.
Can you do a day trip to Sicily from Malta?

Yes, most definetly! However, there’s a lot to see and do in both Malta and Sicily. So, if you have longer than a day, it’s ideal. Otherwise, if you just want to catch a glimpse of either Malta or Sicily, a day trip is doable.
If you want to stay in Malta and do a day trip to Sicily, I’ve listed the driving times to some nice towns.
- Pozzallo to Catania: 1h 15m (110 km)
- Pozzallo to Ragusa: 30m (25 km)
- Pozzallo to Modica: 20m (16 km)
- Pozzallo to Syracuse: 1h 15m (95 km)
- Pozzallo to Taormina: 2 hours (167 km)
If you want to do the opposite and stay in Sicily but visit Malta on a day trip, then I’d recommend visiting Valletta and even Mdina if time allows.
How long should you spend in Sicily & Malta?
There is a lot to see on both islands. To properly experience both, I’d recommend 6 days in Sicily and 4-5 days in Malta. Malta is a small island but there’s plenty to do. However, Sicily is much larger and may need more time than Malta to explore. Therefore, a total of 10 days or more, would be ideal to see both. If you’re short on time you can do it it in maybe 6-7 days. I’d spend 2 days in Malta and the rest in Sicily.
