Lille Christmas Market: France’s Underrated Christmas Destination

Did you know that in just 1 hour from London, you can reach the small, charming French city of Lille? It’s France’s underrated Christmas destination! Here’s how to plan a visit to the Lille Christmas Market in 2026. I loved this charming city, and it was much less crowded than visiting the popular Christmas Markets in France, like in the Alsace region, or in Germany, the Christmas capital of Europe.

Lille is the perfect stop during your Christmas itinerary. The main square has a beautiful Christmas Market, a giant tree, and a Ferris Wheel, and all the shops are decorated with festive lights.

Lille Christmas Market 2026 Dates and Opening Times

The 2026 Lille Christmas Market dates are from November 18-December 30th (Closed on Christmas Day).

The operating hours are daily from 11 am- 8:30 pm, and on Friday and Saturday the market closes later at 10 pm.

Lille Christmas Market Location: Place Rihour

The Lille Christmas Market itself is quite small, but there’s still plenty of shops and food stalls to choose from. There are 80 wooden chalets there. The food stalls include Croustillons Hollandais (fried powdered dough), crepes, tartiflette (a French cheesy potato dish), oysters, mulled wine, and more.

In terms of shopping, you can find nice souvenirs here, with everything from ornaments to winter accessories.

You can actually join a Christmas tour of Lille – you will see all the highlights and learn about the Christmas traditions.

How to Get There

Lille has a small airport called Lille Airport that you can fly into, but if your city doesn’t fly there easily, you can fly into nearby airports like Paris or Brussels South Charleroi and take the train over to Lille. I live in London, so I was able to easily get here in one hour using the Eurostar. It was actually such a convenient trip, and you could even do it as a day trip from London or Paris, of course.

Where to Stay in Lille

I traveled to Lille solo, so finding something affordable and safe was top of mind. So I booked a stay at Hotel De La Paix, and it was the perfect place to explore Lille. It was 5 minutes from the Christmas Markets, which made it even better. The city is compact and easy to explore, so anywhere you pick in the center will be fine.
