SafetyWing Review: The Best Digital Nomad Travel Insurance

Getting insurance as a digital nomad or someone who is planning to travel for more than 45 days at a time is really tough. That’s because most travel insurances force you to have return flights from your home country and not to be away for long periods of time in order to be covered. However, with SafetyWing, that’s not the case. It is designed for travelers who are away from home a lot or traveling for long periods of time. So read on for my full SafetyWing review. It really is the best digital nomad travel insurance for your adventures!

Why travel insurance is important

Honestly, I spent years and years traveling the world and never thought travel insurance was necessary to get. However, now I realize how truly important it is. First of all, you won’t want to be stuck in another country sick without knowing how to visit a doctor, etc.

With SafetyWing, your medical emergencies and doctor visits are covered. They are very quick to respond and connect you to the doctors you need no matter where you are. I’m a solo traveler and was also a digital nomad for a long time. So, having this peace of mind and security is a no brainer for me. Safety is the biggest concern for solo travelers, like myself, especially.

Not only that, I carry around some expensive equipment (drone, dslr camera, my iPhone!) and if it’s ever stolen, I’ll be covered which is a huge relief. The plan literally pays for itself if you decide to get covered and have to make a claim.

What is SafetyWing?

SafetyWing is a travel and medical insurance provider designed for digital nomads, remote workers, and long-term travelers.

Unlike traditional travel insurance, SafetyWing offers flexible, subscription-based coverage that can be purchased while already abroad, making it a convenient option for those without a fixed return date.

Their plans cover essential medical expenses, emergency evacuations, and some travel-related incidents, depending on the level of coverage chosen. One of the key benefits is its affordability compared to other travel insurance providers, making it a popular choice among budget-conscious travelers.

Is SafetyWing legit?

If you aren’t familiar with SafetyWing and wondering if it’s a legitimate company, I can attest it is! SafetyWing is a reliable and reputable company. They provide insurance to 25k active customers per month.

How much do their Insurance plans cost?

SafetyWing offers two main plan types. That is Essential Coverage or Complete Coverage. It can be confusing to understand the difference at first, so let me explain clearly.

The Essential Coverage plan is better for short term travelers who need coverage while traveling abroad. Complete, on the other hand is made for long-term digital nomads who need a more complete coverage plan and it even works in your home country. I have outlined exactly how SafetyWing Complete works for long-term travelers.

The Essential plan pricing is around $56/month while the Complete is $150/month for those aged 10-39 years old. The pricing, however, increases the older you are and those over 70 are not covered.

Prices as of January 2025:

SafetyWing: Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • You can buy the insurance while you’re abroad
  • Unlike many other insurance plans that limit coverage to a set number of days (e.g., 45 days), SafetyWing allows you to stay covered indefinitely while traveling outside your home country.
  • Covers hospitalization, doctor visits, emergency dental, and medical evacuation.
  • Includes trip interruption, lost luggage, and travel delays.
  • Automatic Monthly Renewals are available. This works like a subscription, so you don’t have to remember to renew manually.
  • Adventure sports are covered for an additional charge. Check the full list here.
  • Quick customer service and claim processing time.
  • Reliable and trustworthy

Cons:

  • More expensive for those over 40 years old.
  • Pre-existing conditions are not covered.
  • Accidental damage to electronics is not covered.
  • Trip cancellation coverage is only included in the Complete plan and capped at $300 per trip (not ideal for expensive trips).

Bottom Line

If you’re a frequent traveler, digital nomad, or remote worker looking for affordable and flexible travel medical insurance, SafetyWing is definitely worth considering.

Its biggest advantage is the ability to start or renew coverage while already abroad, unlike many traditional insurance plans.

The Essential plan covers the basics, while the Complete plan offers a more comprehensive plan, including specialist visits, mental health care, and trip cancellations. Claim processing is really quick now! But be sure to read up on which adventure activities are included if you do sports.

The overall value—especially for long-term travelers—is hard to beat. If you need reliable coverage without strict trip-length limits, SafetyWing is a great choice.
